hey! i’m iman n. milner, an all around creative + writer for myself and others. i coined the phrase #bylinebaddie late last year as a joke about my way with words. I thought it was a cute way to celebrate having my words published in outlets other than my own so frequently but it actually got my wheels turning a lot more than i expected. i started to reflect on my journey as a freelance writer—-building a network of editors, learning how to pitch myself to them, figuring out which outlets fit my voice, etc... i remember not really knowing where to start as most of my writing experience came from writing for my own magazine and, subsequently, my own site. where were the writers who looked like me? what were they charging? which editors were the best to work with?
so, it came to me: what if I created a community for black womxn writers that put the spotlight on those of us who are usually behind the pen? what if that community could, in turn, inspire others on this journey through first hand advice? what if i could cut time in half for other black womxn freelance writers?
and, for a true chef’s kiss, what if this community could also serve as a resource for editors looking for black womxn writers making it virtually impossible to say we don’t exist?
and here we are.
I am interviewing some of the dopest Black womxn writers I know. Asking for their advice on navigating the world of writing and putting them all in one place. I know it’s hard to keep up with all of the information coming at us from fiftyleven different places but, I truly believe, there is no better time than now to listen to Black womxn. And I mean really, really listen. So, pull up a chair and let’s get it going.
plus, there’s some super cute merchandise to add to your reading, writing and living experience available in the baddie bits section of the site.
