Who Are You?
My name is Ashley Oken and I’m a freelance music and culture journalist who focuses on punk/ alternative rock music.
Where do you currently reside?
I currently reside in Queens, NY. I love NYC and a great pair of Timberland boots just as much as what I do.
How long have you been writing professionally?
I’ve been writing professionally for a year, as of the start of this February.
Who or what inspires you to write when inspiration is lacking?
Thinking about my love of music and listening to some Jesse McCartney music if I’m stuck usually helps me out.
When did you or will you know you’ve arrived as a writer?
I still feel like I’ve just landed in so many ways, so I don’t feel like I’ve arrived yet.
What piece of writing are you most proud of and why?
I’m most proud of my blog post on overcoming sexual trauma and abuse and sharing how I’ve taken my sexuality back. It was so difficult and scary to write, but it gave me a sense of freedom and helped others too. Upwards of 90 people shared it and I received emails from people who needed to see that trauma doesn’t have to define your life.
What is your favorite quote from yourself and from your favorite writer?
“Words can be like X-Rays if you use them properly—-they’ll go through anything. You read and you’re pierced.”
What does being a Black woman identifying writer mean to you?Especially in the punk/alternative music scene. How does your identity shape your experience?
There are so few women of color in the scene and I like to think that by breaking the color barrier, I can show other black ladies that the scene is for them too- it’s been segregated for so long, both musically and journalistically. It means that I can highlight diverse bands and amplify those who wouldn’t get press. All people belong in the rock scene.
What do you wish you knew before embarking on this journey?
I wish I knew how many hours it takes to truly keep abreast of what’s trending in the entertainment world. I’m always looking at news wires for story ideas, sometimes at a late hour. There’s such a rat race to break things first. I also wish I knew that no doesn’t mean never ; it just means not now. I wouldn’t have taken the rejection so personally in the beginning.
What do you do when you’re not writing?
I love reading, roller skating, and hanging out with my dad when I’m not writing. I’ve always loved YA novels and I’ve read so many great ones so far.
How can people keep in touch with you?
People can keep in touch with me on Instagram and Facebook. I’m working on making a website so I’ll have another method soon!
